The Racing Game of the Year

Forza Motorsport 7 is the latest racing game by Turn 10 Studios. As the tenth installment of the series, the Forza Franchise is known for its beauty and comprehensive experience in competitive racing. Forza Motorsport 7 certainly lives up to its name, pushing limits with gorgeous graphics at 60 frames per second and 4K resolution in high definition. It is truly the most authentic racing games ever made and I had the pleasure of working on this amazing project.

The Championship Brands & Banners

The Forza Driver's Cup features six championships: Seeker, Breakout, Evolution, Domination, Masters, and the Forza Driver's Cup. Each championship contains a number of series and showcase events in the single player campaign. I designed the logos and banners for all the championships. My inspiration for the banner designs were the trophies. Every trophy has a distinct shape and color unique to its own championship. The objective of the championship brands was to show a progression in the Forza Driver's Cup, from casual to formal. The shapes of the trophis played an influential part in how each banner looked.

The Reward Cards

The rewards throughout the game are presented on cards. Reward cards are given to players after they accomplish something or they are purchased through prize crates. The cards include cars, mods, suits, badges, and credits. Colors of the cards represent the rarity of the reward from common, uncommon, rare, super rare, to legendary. I designed the layouts and explored the look and colors of the cards.

ALL THE ICONOGRAPHY

Icons are prevalent throughout the game and are used to communicate features, tools, and information. I designed the vast majority of all the icons in FM7. While some icons were adapted and refreshed from previous installments, others required a completely new design. The goal was to make the icons simple and clearly defined even at a small scale.

THE TIER BADGES

Collection Tiers are basically levels players have in the game. Tiers are increased by earning Car Collection points from purchasing or receiving new cars. By climbing up tiers, players get better Driver Level rewards and status amongst fellow players. I designed the look of the Collection Tier badges.

CONCLUSION

I joined Turn 10 Studios later in the production of Forza 7, but helped complete and ship the game. Since the design language was already established, my job was to use the guidelines to reskin and create new scenes based off of existing scenes or wireframes from the UX designers. I also had a hand in helping develop flows for some of  the new features. In addition, I created graphics, logos, and icons used throughout the game and processed thousands of images for 4K and HD resolutions. As the main UI artist, I worked closely with the creative director, UX designers, XAML and devs, and other artists to create a cohesive UI for the game. It was definitely challenging at times but very rewarding to see the final results.  It was a joy working with the different talents in the UX team. Collaborating in a positive and hard working environment made the challenges invigorating to tackle, making this past year and a half a very fulfilling experience. Thanks Turn 10!
